The Attitude of the Tongue
After doing the reading this morning we spent some time around the breakfast table in discussion of the meaning of "teachers" in James 3:1. "Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment." When first reading this verse it's appears to be somewhat misplaced. It warns those "teachers" of being held to a higher standard and one naturally assume that it is addressing those who are teachers of the word of God. When examining other translations and concordances we see that it has a different meaning that is consistent with the rest of the verses. In the King James translation; "My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation." Here the word "masters" is not in overlord over someone that you own in slavery, but one that you overlord by the attitude of your tongue. You push you point as a Master, treating all others as below you. It is actually a charge to humility in speech. A wonderful reminder to us all.

but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison
So true. It's so easy to say the wrong things at times.
The story about "greek fire" was intriguing, I'd never heard that. Pretty amazing present day scientists can't figure it out!

Re: February 10th
We had a great breakfast table discussion on today's reading. One of the topics that we looked at was how once again we strive to do something that we know is humanly impossible, control our tongues. We are told in James 3 the importance of controlling our tongue but in James 3:8 we see that no man can tame the tongue. Our striving to do so brings glory to God as he see us try to be Like Christ.
Another thing we each shared stories on was the good that a "kind tongue" can do and the positive response you receive from a kind word shared. It is interesting how when you take the time to speak a kind word with people you meet, or spend a moment listening to them, the positive affect it has. So the tongue is a powerful tool, whichever way you chose to use it, so choose wisely.
