Brokenness
I have always liked this Psalm, I find David's confession and understanding of his sin enduring and inspiring, that I might be able to be that aware of my own transgressions maybe I would have less transgression in my life.
A part of the verse that I had not given much thought before was:
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight;
So often when I pray and ask for forgiveness I am praying because of the consequence of my sin. David recognizes that the sin is against God while the action or the consequence may have effected someone else. That one stanza also recognizes that we are accountable to God.

The Ultimate Punishment...
...must be what worried David the most; "Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me." I can't imagine a more grievous consequence than losing God's presence or the absence of the Holy Spirit. That would be the ultimate punishment.

"Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you."
That's just what David continues to do even today is to teach us sinners God's ways.
